Program/Policy Description 1. Six County Case Study. Intensive site visits over three years in six California Counties (some leaders others not) regarding how they identify and serve women with alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, with mental health issues, or domestic violence issues. 2. Research with 882 women in two California counties examining prevalence of AOD, mental health and domestic violence issues, and the effects they have on welfare tenure, employment and child well-being.

Sample Size and Unit 1. For six county case study no client sample. Interviews with administrators and staff in social service, mental health, AOD, domestic violence agencies and programs. Unit of analysis is usually county. 2. For research study: random sample in Kern and Stanislaus counties of roughly 440 women heads of household age 19-59 speaking English or Spanish as first language. Unit of analysis: county and individual.
Execution In research study, initial in-depth interviews were completed with 55% of Kern sample and 71% of Stanislaus sample. Second round interviews with over 85% of first round respondents.

Sites Studied

Six county case study is being conducted in Alameda, Monterey, Los Angeles, Kern, Stanislaus and Shasta counties in California.
