Program/Policy Description The purpose of this study is to identify welfare recipients in California that may be at high risk for adverse outcomes under welfare reform, and to determine how those families are coping. Study components: 1) focus groups with current, long-term welfare recipients regarding their experiences with CalWorks, 2) in-depth, qualitative interviews with a small number of "precarious" families for one year to elucidate the fundamental challenges of coping with welfare reform, and 3) a survey of approximately 600 families, to include topics such as housing status, recent employment history, use of social support systems, child care, and education and training.
